RCM&D Consultants Selected to Present at National Risk Management Conferences

March 5, 2015

The Risk Management Society (RIMS)  Annual Conference & Exhibition: April 26-29, 2015 – New Orleans, LA

Karen Mathura, RN, JD, CPHRM, CLCS, Risk Management & Claims Consultant and Lauren Bicknese, Risk Management Consultant were selected to present on “The eHealth Revolution: Risks that May Ensue” as a hot topic discussion for the RIMS 2015 Annual Conference.  With the continuous advancements in technology, the delivery of health information and healthcare services is rapidly changing. Telehealth practice in the US is expected to double within the next two years. The expansion of health care delivery across international borders via electronic means continues to grow. The increasingly evident use of mobile technology in today’s society is finding its way into the delivery of healthcare, whether we are ready or not. Statistics show that providers are using mobile devices to collect, read, and monitor patient data and studies have shown that consumers have high expectations for the delivery and management of their healthcare through mobile technology. The “eHealth” revolution is here.

The presentation will define common eHealth buzzwords – telemedicine, telehealth, mHealth – and discuss the risks associated with each. The regulatory landscape, including the FDA, CMS, HIPAA, state policies and medical board positions, will be analyzed and discussed. Obstacles to practicing via telemedicine and mHealth will be explored, followed by risk management solutions and proactive strategies for incorporating these methods of care delivery into current practice.

The American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM)  Annual Conference: October 18-21, 2015 – Indianapolis, IN

Karen Mathura, RN, JD, CPHRM, CLCS, Risk Management & Claims Consultant and Lauren Bicknese, Risk Management Consultant were selected to present on “War Stories & Lessons Learned: The mHealth Revolution” at the ASHRM 2015 Annual Conference. With the recent rise in mHealth and telehealth technology, the delivery of health information and services is quickly being transformed, both nationally and internationally. Medical Mobile Applications for smart phone devices are being deployed faster than legislation can be developed to regulate them. Additionally, patients' expectations are advancing just as quickly as the technology. This session will provide a deep dive analysis of six case examples, or "war stories" from this mHealth revolution, to demonstrate risks, benefits and lessons learned for healthcare risk management professionals, as well as offer solutions for utilizing mHealth solutions effectively.

Topics discussed will include mHealth’s impact on how consumers will find and providers will send health information, patient-provider and provider-provider communication and the newly encountered risks these changes will bring, such as ePrescribing, the "informed patient" and patient privacy and data security.
